Discover Bardstown

Bardstown has recently been named the ‘Most Beautiful Small Town in America” by Rand McNally and USA Today.  The heart and soul of this beautiful little town can be found at My Old Kentucky Home State Park.  There are no experiences more quintessentially Kentucky than this one.  The historic mansion, featured in Stephen Foster’s song “My Old Kentucky Home,” offers guests a glimpse at what life was like over two centuries ago in this beautifully restored Federal Style mansion.  Included in the tour are the formal gardens, the mansion, and outbuildings that include a smokehouse, historic kitchen, carriage house, cabin, and springhouse, all set amongst century old magnolias, maples, and cedar trees. The extremely popular outdoor musical, “The Stephen Foster Story,” held at the Old Kentucky Home grounds, should be on everyone’s itinerary this summer.

Civil War Bardstown KentuckyBourbon enthusiasts won’t want to miss tours of local distilleries, which include Heaven Hill, Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Barton 1792, and Willett Distillery.  Beyond that, there is an upscale tasting bar and gift shop at Kentucky Bourbon Marketplace, and the Oscar Getz Museum offers an in-depth look into the history of this famous spirit.  Civil War history enthusiasts will also have plenty to do in Bardstown.  The best place to start is the Civil War Museum of Western Theater, which is one of the 4 most important Civil War Museums in all of Kentucky, and houses the largest collection of Civil War artifacts, including authentic uniforms, battle flags, weapons, maps and other documents.  The historic Walking Tour through Bardstown will guide you through the largest portion of local history as well.  It’s also worth mentioning that a portion of the Holy Land Tour runs through Bardstown Kentucky, and includes several local churches and sites of interest.
