10 Fun Fall Things to Do in Kentucky Bourbon Country

We’re located in beautiful Bardstown, Kentucky, where there’s no shortage of fun things to do, inside and out, within a few miles of our front doors.

  1. Since you’re here because you love Kentucky Bourbon and want to learn more, consider booking a room during mid-October’s Kentucky Bourbon Festival. This year, the events will be served with a “Virtual Twist,” but the show will go on!
  2. There are few better places to take in dazzling fall color than at the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in nearby Clermont. Whether you’re a member or a guest, treks around the trails on this 16,137-acre oasis of natural serenity can be made by appointment.
  3. Get a living window into the cultural and military forces that shaped Kentucky Bourbon country along Bardstown’s Museum Row.
  4. Are you a “foamer,” aka, a train enthusiast? If so, a tour via the Kentucky Railway Museum in nearby New Haven might just be the literal ticket. (While the popular My Old Kentucky Dinner Train is closed as of late August, keep checking — they’ll reopen as soon as they can!)
  5. Possibly the best way to visit Bardstown’s Kentucky Bourbon distilleries without worrying about how much you sample, try Bourbontown Tours. You can customize any way you want if you’d rather shop, look at horse farms, or sample food and drink in the big city (Louisville). And they’ll help you with the hard work of determining which distilleries are open, and what service restrictions may be in place.
  6. Staying over on a Saturday night in October? Check out the Bardstown Ghost Trek. Patti Starr, Certified Ghost Hunter, will show you where the bodies are buried … and where the spirits are not.
  7. Interested in Bardstown-area bourboning by bicycle? Pick a route here. Or here. Some routes are pure country; others include whistle-wetting stops.
  8. If hiking’s more your thing, here are some recommended trails.
  9. Bardstown doesn’t have just bourbon distilleries — it has wineries as well. One that tells the story of the town’s changing face while honoring its history is Chuckleberry Farm, where a local couple converted a tobacco farm into acreage for berries and winemaking.
  10. If you want a relaxing experience outdoors, the ideal sight might be My Old Kentucky Home State Park. Its 235 acres offer a bit of everything: luxuriant grounds, historic structures, a variety of food-and-drink tours, and a PGA Championship-quality golf course.
